In a shameless moment of self-promotion, I just wanted to point everyone in the direction of an article I wrote for The Strange Kids Club on how the 1982 movie, Conan the Barbarian, has influenced my life. I thought you'd all dig it! And be sure to check out their site all this week for more Conan-related posts going up in anticipation of the upcoming movie.
I even threw in a couple of quick spot illustrations and will have another Conan post there this week. Just spreadin' the Conan love.

Great article, Reis. It's almost beyond my understanding that someone's first meeting with Conan might be the movie. Don't get me wrong, I love the 1st movie; even if it isn't exact, it at least FEELS like Conan, something the trailer for the new film just fails to do. But for me, it was the british b & w reprints of the Marvel Barry Smith books, specifically the third issue 'Zukala's Daughter' which sold me on him forever ( and which I still own ).
As well as all the reasons you state in the article, I'd say Conan is my favourite fictional hero simply because he knows the right thing to do in any given situation, even if said path will cost him the most. There's a life lesson right there!
Send us a scan of your CONAN comic Pete...we'd love to see it.
Reis...it was easy to get lost in your article. I feel ya every step of the way. Seeing CONAN on the big screen for a first encounter must have been awesome!
Great story Reis.
Those early HBO days introduced me in a similar way to the humor of Mel Brooks watching Blazing Saddles countless times sneaking downstairs after my folks went to bed.
Thanks for the kind words, guys! And let's not forget what HBO really stands for; "Hey! Beastmaster's on!" ;)
Beautifully written article! It’s been a while but with this new movie coming out it is definitely time for a Conan-a-thon. DISH Network is offering both of the original Conan movies on AMC this week (just found out because I work there). This week’s movie party is going to be the best, especially because we’re going to top it off with the new Conan in 3D!
