CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1982)

Through the history of mankind, the times that are most recorded in mythology and song are those of great deeds and fantastic adventures. Such a time was the Hyborian Age. Such a tale is the story of “CONAN THE BARBARIAN”.

Cimmerian CONAN (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is captured as a child after his parents savage murder by raiding Vanir led by Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones), head also of the malignant snake-cult of Set. Fifteen years’ agony, first chained to the Wheel of Pain grinding grain and then enslaved as a Pit Fighter, forges a magnificent body and indomitable spirit. Freed miraculously one day by his owner, CONAN, with his companions Subotai the Mongol (Gerry Lopez) and Valeria, Queen of Thieves (Sandahl Bergman), sets forth upon his quest to learn “the riddle of steel” which, his father has prophesied, will confer ultimate power; and to kill the arch-villain Thulsa Doom.

The fabulous Arnold Schwarzenegger, actor, author, seven times Mr. Olympia and five times Mr. Universe, is back for further adventures of CONAN, the warrior king, in the sequel to 1982’s CONAN THE BARBARIAN.

This time CONAN promises to a lead a spoiled Princess to fulfill her destiny in return for the return of his true love; however, CONAN is being used and has been targeted for murder. Complete with a wonderful supporting cast, CONAN THE DESTROYER is filled with hilarious barbaric action. CONAN is joined by a large cast that includes Grace Jones and Wilt Chamberlain. In this second CONAN epic, he is asked by the evil queen Taramis to accompany a beautiful young princess to find a magic treasure. If he returns with the treasure and the virgin, the Queen promises to bring CONAN’s beloved Valeria back from the dead. But little does he know that she plans to kill them both, or that the return of the treasure will mean the extinction of mankind.

This action-packed fantasy takes place twelve thousand years ago, an undreamed-of age before recorded history filled with fantastic kingdoms across an uncharted world. Robert E. Howard’s pulp novel warrior is brought to life in director Marcus Nispel’s fantasy action adventure. Jason Momoa stars as the sword-wielding CONAN THE BARBARIAN, out for revenge against the evil Khalar Singh, who enslaved and slaughtered the people of his village.

Since birth, Conan’s life has been marked by violence, and after watching his fellow tribesmen and his father brutally and cruelly killed, Conan vows to avenge his peoples’ slaughter, even if it means sacrificing his own life in the process…

Not Conan, but these movies were most likely made to cash in on the success of Conan the Barbarian.
